This environmentally friendly solution uses a catalytic/magnetic process and a special media to transform hardness into a form that prevents hard water scale while simultaneously removing chlorine, significantly reducing chloramines and removing trace heavy metals such as Arsenic, Lead, Chromium and others.  As a bonus benefit, the media used is biostatic thus preventing any bio growth which occurs with carbon offered by competitive systems.  No salt, no chemicals, no water to drain and no electricity.

How Does the Aquafer Work?

Hard water comes in contact with a seat and plunger which causes a slight pressure reduction.  With this reduction, calcium hardness crystals are created. These crystals are multiplied through a catalytic reaction, and then pass through a rare earth magnetic field.  This field is able to hold the hardness crystals as a suspended solid for up to 72 hours.  When a suspended solid, the hardness in the water will not attach to plumbing fixtures or any appliance in your home/business that uses water.

Benefits of the Aquafer

If you’re not happy with the quality of the water flowing through your taps, the Aquafer Watersource offers one of the more effective and hassle-free solutions for improving your water’s quality and taste.

The system does not use salt or electricity, and requires no maintenance or filters to be replaced.

In addition to the time-saving (and cost-saving) advantages of never having to purchase salt, chemicals or replacement filters, the Aquafer water conditioner offers these benefits as well:

  • Eliminates hard water scale on your pipes and plumbing fixtures
  • Improves plant growth by delivering “wetter” water
  • Reduces bathtub rings
  • Prevents growth of microbial contaminants
  • Makes your soap and detergents last longer

More Specs

Most water hardness treatment systems rely on sodium ion exchange which can have adverse effects to both people and the environment. While ion exchange systems substitute salt (sodium) for calcium, the Aquafer transforms dissolved calcium to crystallized calcium. Calcium in its crystallized state is rendered harmless and free from its objectionable scaling effects.

The Aquafer has many uses. The Aquafer is used where superior water is desired for both taste and functional use. It is also used for commercial applications where scale prevention is required, such as water heater pre-treatment, reverse osmosis pre treatment, etc.

Aside from the patented Catalytic / Magnetic Process, the Aquafer is unique in the following ways: 1. The effects of water hardness are rendered harmless without the use of any chemicals or salt. 2. The existence of local bans on water softeners and waste discharge permits are not an issue with the Aquafer as well.

  • You are not spending money on them
  • You are not ingesting them in part or whole.
  • You are not adding pollution into your drain or water supplies.

The Aquafer alters the state of the water. It changes the chemistry of the water. It does not add anything to it.

None. Since the Aquafer changes the chemistry of the water, no water is used.

It is in an altered state. Imagine a bathtub full of water an in the corner of the tub are calcium crystals. These crystals can be thought of little ball-bearings that will not adhere to any surface that they come in contact with unlike dissolved calcium what adheres to most surfaces after the H2O portion of the water evaporates.

The calcium remain suspended for up to 72 hours. Normal water usage indicates a typical household will turn the hot water over at least once a day. The calcium crystals will be washed down the drain before they have a chance to revert to a dissolved state.

Other companies are trying to replicate our product. They are selling so-called magnetic water treatment devices without the testing, engineering and patents that has gone into the Aquafer. These systems are rarely effective and lack the ingenuity of the Aquafer. Patent law also protects the replication of our Aquafer. There are imitators out there, but are only similar in appearance, not in quality, performance and effectiveness.

This is a whole house water conditioner. After the scale prevention process, the water then flows through KDF
which reduces chlorine, heavy metals,  prevents bacteria growth and scale prevention. The Aquafer will provide your home with great tasting, healthy and safe water from every fixture in your home.

Instructions

Congratulations on your Aquafer Water Conditioner Purchase.

You have just received the ultimate water conditioner device!

Before proceeding with the actual installation information, take a few moments to read about this incredible way of treating water for homes and businesses.

First and foremost let us thank you for having the goods conscience to help the World save water and eliminate putting salt into the environment. Our current users of this product are saving 25,000,000 gallons of precious water EACH YEAR for their fellow citizens and this number grows with each purchase and the total savings since the release of the product is estimated to be at least 500,000,000 (1/2 BILLION) gallons as of January 2020. Add to that the reduction of discharge salt of 5,000,000 pounds EACH YEAR and a total of 125,000,000 pounds and you can see why we are truly excited.

Why is water preservation so important? We offer a couple of examples. First, China. With its nearly 100% polluted surface water supplies she relies on wells for industry, agriculture, and human consumption. Much of their clean water comes from a huge aquifer under the North China Plain. This source is dropping at over 5 ft. per year — what will such a country do if they run out of water? Closer to home in the eight states comprising the Great Plains is another example. There lies the Ogallala aquifer. It supplies the water that produces about 1/3 of the food we have in the U.S. It is being withdrawn at almost 5 ft. per year and nature is replacing it at only a few inches a year. Once you realize that it takes 1,000 pounds (120 gallons) of water to produce 1 pound of edible grain and 100 pounds of grain PLUS 1,000 gallons of drinkable water to produce 1 pound of beef you can get a feel for the importance of good water to keep us fed. What will we eat when the water is gone?

Within our homes, the primary problems associated with the use of water are related to hardness (high soap consumption, poor cleaning, scale formation to name a few), and taste and odor caused by disinfecting chemicals such as chlorine.

The Aquafer WaterSource water conditioner unit uses a well-refined (in-service Worldwide for over twenty years) catalytic/magnetic device to render the water hardness harmless for up to 72 hours. This is done by converting the hardness from a dissolved contaminant to a sub-micron suspended solid that literally washes through the plumbing system before it can react and form a scale or interfere with the action of soaps and detergents. Powerful long-life rare earth magnets are used so there is no need for an outside power source. The process is self-cleaning and requires no chemicals.

Once the hardness is controlled, the water is exposed to a special media that destroys the residual chlorine and eliminates the taste and odor associated with this chemical. Unlike activated carbon, this media does not adsorb the chlorine so it does not “load up” and requires frequent costly replacement. As added benefits, this media has been demonstrated to reduce trace amounts of heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, etc.) from water and has been classified as a biocide to kill residual bacteria. Because the flow is always in the upward direction there is no resulting need for wasting water for backwash and no need for a valve to control water direction. No valve. No moving parts. No service! The units are stand-alone treatment devices for virtually all clean municipal waters and some clean private well water supplies. Special pre and post-filters as well as laboratory consultation is available for discolored or problematic waters.

O.K. Let’s now begin the process of installation.

Opening the Aquafer Water Conditioner Carton

  • Please inspect the packaging prior to opening. If there is visible damage make a notation on the bill of lading or the delivery receipt.
  • Carefully cut all four sides of the carton as close to the floor as possible.
  • Slide unit off of the remaining carton base.
  • Lift the carton up and over the top of the unit. Discard.
  • Peel the protective plastic film off of the stainless steel outer tank. Discard.
  • Inspect the unit for concealed damage to the outer stainless steel tank. Report to carrier if necessary.

Prepare Unit for Installation

  1. Refer to the attached drawing. Identify the yoke (pipe connector) from the options are shown – male or female pipe, brass or plastic, etc.
  2. If a by-pass valve was included:
    (1) Refer to the sketch and attach to the head that is on the top of the tank. Be sure that all mating surfaces are clean and free of any debris. Wipe with a soft lint-free cloth. Lubricate the O-rings with a light film of silicone grease or a few drops of liquid hand or dish soap. When properly installed the two handles will be on top facing the ceiling.
    (2) Secure in place with the clips provided on the by-pass and snug (do not overtighten) the screws provided.

NOTE: When viewing the unit from the BACK the inlet (untreated water) MUST enter the port on the RIGHT side. Treated water MUST exit the unit from the LEFT port. Failure to follow these instructions will cause plumbing problems and costly unit damage. Do NOT go any farther if you have any confusion about this portion of the instructions!

Turn off water supply and proceed to next step.

Connect Pipes to Water Conditioner Unit

Be certain to follow good assembly practices and any applicable local plumbing codes.

NOTE: Some key distributors offer an excellent option to the Aquafer. It consists of an inlet five (5) micron filter and an outlet carbon block filter. The inlet filter adds life to the system by collecting any debris in the water supply and the carbon block removes trace Volatile Organic Compounds as well as providing the ultimate in taste.

If this option is provided, the white light weight 5 micron cartridge is on the INLET and the heavier carbon block is on the OUTLET.

It is best to install these filter housings before proceeding with the installation of the
Aquafer. Simply notice the in and out that are embossed on each of the filters and follow the water flow accordingly.

  1. Attach the yoke assembly to the by-pass valve if provided or directly to the in-out head if a by-pass was not included. Follow the cleaning instructions above. DO NOT FIRMLY ATTACH.
  2. Set the unit adjacent to the pipes and in the spot where you wish the final location to be.
  3. Take all necessary measurements and proceed to cut pipes and apply fittings.
  4. To avoid damage to the Noryl head on top of the tank, it is extremely important that the pipes line up properly with the fitting and that there is no pipe weight transferred to the head. A good procedure is to remove the pipe adapter from the unit at this time and do the attachment to the pipes while it is off of the unit.
  5. Now place the unit and align with the pipe connection yoke. Correct as necessary so that the head on the tank (or the by-pass valve) freely and easily slips into the adapter. Be sure all surfaces are clean and lubricate as indicated above. Secure with the clips provided.

Start Up

Locate a high flow faucet as close as possible to the unit. Open it all of the way.

SLOWLY turn on the water supply. About 1/8 full open.

Allow water to flow into the unit. Air will be dispelled from the tank through the open faucet.

Allow to flow until there is no more air and water only is exiting from the faucet. NOTE: IF AT ANY TIME YOU NOTICE A FLOW OF THE MEDIA (GOLD COLORED PARTICLES) EXITING THE FAUCET. STOP. TURN OFF WATER. THE UNIT HAS BEEN INSTALLED BACKWARDS!!!. PLUMBING IS REVERSED.

Open faucet all of the way and allow water to run until clear. Installation is complete.

Look for and repair any minor leaks.

ENJOY YOUR EXCELLENT WATER FROM A TOTALLY ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE AND FRIENDLY UNIT.

AUTOMATIC NUTRIENT AND pH ADJUSTMENT UNIT MODEL ANF-8

Nutrient Delivery System for growing crops indoors without soil by using a HYDROPONIC or AEROPONIC process is becoming extremely popular. Often called URBAN FARMING these farms are not dependent on the weather, require less space especially when growth trays are stacked, and offer shortened growth cycles through the use of LED lamps.

Crop yield and quality are determined by WATER QUALITY normally accomplished through treating the source water with REVERSE OSMOSIS. To this treated water, carefully selected NUTRIENTS are added and pH is adjusted. Both tailored to a specific crop. Accuracy is critical so controlled batches are made in a BATCH TANK prior to addition to the crop.

Automatic Water Deionizer

Two Column Water Deionizer Systems

Two column automatic water deionizer systems consist of two media tanks in series. The first tank contains cation resin in the Hydrogen (H) form and the second tank contains anion resin in the Hydroxyl (OH) form. Typical treated water quality is in the range of 50,000-250,000 ohm resistivity depending on feed water chemistry and 1,000,000 to 2,500,000 ohm resistivity with R.O. water as a feed. These units are designed to regenerate with chemicals DIRECTLY FROM THEIR SHIPPING CONTAINERS—NO HANDLING REQUIRED. Chemicals used are 30% Hydrochloric (HCl) acid and 50% liquid Sodium Hy-droxide (NaOH). Systems are fully automatic with regeneration initiated by a field adjustable resistivity meter. A manual override is included to allow the operator to finish a “run” without interruption.

Automatic Water Deionizer

Mixed Bed Single Tank

Mixed bed single tank automatic water deionizer systems consist of both the cation and the anion resin mixed within the same tank for the ultimate in reduction of dissolved solids. Treated water quality is from 10,000,000 to 18,000,000 ohm Resistance. Resins are separated during regeneration with HCl and NaOH and then re-mixed with air for service (a source of compressed air delivering 6.5 scfm/sq. ft. tank area is required).  A softener is also required to pretreat the anion regeneration water.

Backwashing filters are used for the physical properties of water, which includes removing color, taste and odor. Backwashing filters are also used for chemical control: arsenic removal, chloramines removal.. For instance you can have iron discoloration, which is a physical property of the water and you can also have odor issues such as hydrogen sulfite/rotten-egg odor and by using a select medium or combinations of media Dime Water, Inc. can take care of both in one tank.

Because we are dealing with harsh waters it is very important that we use tank and valve materials that are not going to be compromised by the water conditions. Quite often there is pre and post treatment to backwashing filters. The pretreatment will often be a chemical feed system, feeding something like chlorine or hydrogen peroxide, perhaps ozone will help with the oxidizing properties and will remove iron and manganese. It is not unusual to put a post cartridge filter after a media filter, let the media filter do the 99% of the work and then just any trace amounts of the contaminant would then be picked up by the post cartridge filter.

We typically start as a single tank with a valve on top of that, within that tank we can put at least 10 different materials depending on what the water condition is.

We can put in materials to take out iron, hydrogen sulfide, and visible things in the water (turbidity). We can adjust the PH and then we can take out combinations of those materials depending on the water condition.

As a company that’s really our specialty, we tend to do more of that and do it better than anyone else.

Softener Control Valves

Used in a variety of contexts, control valves regulate the water flow based on signals received from system controllers by fully or partially opening or closing, which is done automatically by actuators.

Filter Media

These filters use a bed of sand, peat, crushed glass, foam, granite or other material to filter water for drinking, swimming, aquaculture and other applications. We are able to offer 20 different filter media at any given time.

A water treatment system service and maintenance plan is an economical interference-free manner in order to ensure that the water treatment system is operating at the desired performance. Our approach is – on a local basis including much of southern California – to use contractors’ help. More often than not, we are able to provide a plumber or a licensed technician that will work on our behalf to get the equipment repaired. We are available from 8am-5pm, Monday to Friday to answer all your questions!

Dime Water, Inc. provides pre- and post treatment instructions with every system at the time of the shipment. Our staffed engineers will be in touch with you to answer all your questions about pre- or post treatment. If you have any questions, call and talk to our water treatment experts.

Boron Reduction Systems

Boron reduction system completely assembled and tested units for direct use or as post reverse osmosis system polishing for boron.

Boron is an element most often found in seawater or in water supplies that have been contaminated by seawater intrusion in wells. Boron in our diet from all sources (plants and water) up to a maximum of 20 mg/day can have positive effects on the brain, immune system modulating and hormones. Problems With Boron arise in agriculture because it is toxic to many plants ESPECIALLY CANNABIS! Because Boron has an extremely week electrical charge, it is difficult to remove even with high pressure reverse osmosis membranes (even desal) unless horribly expensive 2 pass systems are used and even then, remaining Boron is often too high.

The revolutionary Dime Water, Inc. system utilizes a very unusual and efficient ion exchange resin-based adsorption medium that can seek and remove Boron directly from the well or from RO permeate. Essentially a water softener with a special regenerant control as shown to the right of the pressure tank and a smart controller to the left.

Once water chemistry is determined and a volume/flow of water is expressed a system is designed that:

  • Meters the volume of water that has been treated and automatically starts a regeneration
  • Backwashes out any collected debris
  • Draws in hydrochloric acid to dissolve the Boron off of the resin
  • Rinses the Boron laden acid to drain
  • Flushes the resin clean
  • Draws in sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) to neutralize the resin
  • Rinses and then flushes the caustic soda out
  • Returns to providing Boron removal
  • The use of acid and caustic is highlighted.

Chemical Feed Systems

American flag with Made in USA text, indicating product originDownload Brochure

Dime Water, Inc. does everything possible to avoid the use of regeneration chemicals when working with customers to solve water related problems. In the last 21 years of practicing this policy we have prevented the discharge of hundreds of millions of gallons of chemically tainted water being discharged into waste water plants, aquifers, and surface water sources.

There are situations, however, where some type of chemical must be used to properly treat water — typically to raise pH to eliminate corrosion; kill bacteria to make water potable; coat metal plumbing to stop corrosion; add an oxidizing agent to keep a filter medium continuously regenerated; pre-treat a RO unit to enhance membrane life.

Chemicals we use include:

  • Potassium carbonate. Naturally occurring salt. The carbonate portion neutralizes the carbon dioxide in water to elevate the pH. Carbon dioxide creates carbonic acid that is usually the cause of low pH (acid) water.
  • Liquid chlorine bleach. Creates hypochlorous acid in water that kills harmful bacteria for potability and also bacteria causing sulfur (rotten egg) odors and iron bacteria. Also an excellent oxidizing agent to pre-oxidize iron and manganese prior to filtration. Keeps filter media clean and in a regenerated state. Properly fed, the chlorine is consumed by chemical and biological demand (COD and BOD) with only a slight remaining residual in the water. Chlorine reverts naturally to salt.
  • Hydrogen peroxide. Used as a direct replacement for chlorine without the taste, odor and disinfectant by products (DBP’s) associated with chlorine. Reverts to water in presence of light.
  • Sodium Hexametaphosphate. Tiny quantities in water (1 or 2 mg/l) will react with metals such as calcium to coat metal pipes and fixtures to prevent corrosion. Phosphate is a plant nutrient thus favored for corrosion in irrigation systems.
  • RO anti-scale chemical. Normally a weak organic acid combined with a surfactant. Eliminates the need for a pre-RO softener thus saving the operator capital cost and operating expense. Normally fed into the raw feed water at a level of 1-2 mg/l. This trace chemical volume remains in the reject water with none appearing in the treated water.
  • Sodium Bisulfite to remove chlorine with low CAPEX or when carbon and KDF replacement is impractical or prhibitoably expensive.  Redox process yielding chloride, sulfate and free hydrogen

The key to the application is to treat a relatively constant flow so that a simple on/off feed pump as shown here can be employed. This is usually the situation with RO pre-treatment and for flows between a well and a storage tank either atmospheric or hydro pneumatic. If variable flows are to have chemical injected, a meter that produces a pulse proportional to flow and a pump that can be paced with such a meter must be employed —a much more expensive set of components.

Two types of pumps are normally used:

Diaphragm – where a flexible material is moved back and forth creating vacuum on pull and a pressure on push.

Peristaltic – where a tube is pinched and released with vacuum on release and pressure on pinch. Application, serviceability, available materials, and price determine the selection.

Chemicals

The chemical treatment of water employs using an extensive palette of chemicals, according to your water issue. From algaecides, biocides, corrosion inhibitors, to disinfectants, flocculants and scale inhibitors, Dime Water Inc. provides everything you need in term of chemical water treatment.

Feed Pumps

Feed pumps provide accurate continuous feeding, provided that the pump rates are modulated to reflect system changes. Continuously operating feed pumps are simple feed systems that provide adequate control in some cases.

Solution Tanks

Common Issues with Chemical Feed Systems:

More often than not the problem is a loss of suction and as a result there is no output for the chemical feed pump. The problem most of the times is a foot valve, which gets blocked and the cause of blockage more often than not has to do with mixing chemicals with bad water instead of following the instructions and mixing chemicals with a good quality water.

If you notice that the container that is holding the chemical is not going down and you see that nothing is being consumed means that the chemical feed system is not working. Whatever you are doing with the chemicals, be it anti-scale for reverse osmosis or bleach for killing bacteria or elevating the pH the desired results just stop.

Properly designed high-pressure Commercial Reverse Osmosis and Industrial Reverse Osmosis Units:

  • Are able to reduce all dissolved analytes by 99% EXCEPT for Boron and Nitrates. Significant Boron reduction with its weak ionic charge requires special membranes and higher operating pressures, special pretreatment, or post-treatment. Nitrates require special membranes and higher pressures or post-treatment to reach 99% removal.
  • Can be constructed to achieve one or two megohm quality water without the need for post-treatment such as EDI or ion exchange DI tanks.
  • Have a membrane porosity from 0.0001 to 0.001 micron which makes it an effective barrier to bacteria, viruses, cysts, and endotoxins.
  • Are able to operate with water efficiencies as high as 85%
  • Will function without membrane replacement or cleaning for 5 years or more.
  • Provide extremely low hardness levels suitable for high-pressure boiler applications
  • As an aggregate use 25% less electrical energy than they did a decade ago because of improvements in membrane technology
  • Are offered with blend valves to permit tailoring of water constituents for brewers, distillers, coffee preparation, and bottlers.
  • Offer cost-effective pretreatment that eliminates CAPEX and OPEX of carbon filters and water softeners.
  • Can be custom-fabricated to fit provided spaces
  • Use controls that have a 10 year plus 100% reliability history

A Primer for Commercial Reverse Osmosis

What it does to water

Its sole purpose is to separate the vast amount of water from all molecules of minerals and compounds dissolved in it utilizing pressure. Properly designed the average single pass unit will remove approximately 98.5% of the dissolved items with notable exceptions listed later on. The vehicle to make this process possible is called a semi-permeable membrane or membrane.

History of the commercial reverse osmosis (RO) process

The very first attempt to use a membrane for the removal of the dissolved materials originated as a military-sponsored project in Southern California in the late 1960s. This almost immediately became a popular product for households and gradually transitioned to commercial applications by the mid-’70s. Currently, a plethora of component manufacturers, both US and Pacific Rim-based have turned the commercial reverse osmosis industry into one requiring low entrance capital which in turn has fostered providers with low technical skills. Unfortunately, these businesses lead to low prices and muddy the marketplace, leaving the first-time purchaser with inadequate equipment.

Current popular uses

Medical, electronics, agriculture, beverages, drinking water, electroplating, painting, brewing, distilling, waste remediation to name a few.

The three most important considerations in commercial reverse osmosis design are:

Pretreatment

Its importance cannot be overstated. Because of their materials of construction, membranes will attempt to remove everything dissolved in the water which leads to:

  • Hard water scaling of membranes which can make them ineffective sometimes in hours with water production tailing off to a dribble and the quality rapidly declining simultaneously. Cure can be a softener (expensive to purchase and operate), anti-scale chemical feed (only as reliable as the person responsible for replenishing the chemicals), or the Dime Water, Inc. ESF chemical-free, service-free, low-cost alternative.
  • Oxidizing materials such as iron and manganese that affect the membrane same as Hardness only more quickly.
  • Chlorine and organics removal. Modern membranes are slowly destroyed by chlorine
and organics so they must be completely and reliably removed.

Duty cycle

All too often this is overlooked to expedite the closing of a sale and units are delivered that must operate 24/7. Not only does this shorten system life, but no room is left for short or long-term increase use.

Membrane selection and quantity

With so many available, care must be taken to match performance to water chemistry and not to torture them by using too few. The resulting shortened membrane life cost pales in comparison to the initial price savings.

Commercial Reverse Osmosis Systems and Water Purification

(RO) membranes are the most common and popular in use. Most are polymer-based and will remove 98% of all dissolved solids (salts) present in the feed stream in a single pass. This removal percentage is called Rejection. By taking the product water from one or a number of membranes called the first pass and putting that water through another membrane or group of membranes we create a two-pass system, which can remove well over 99% of the dissolved solids resulting in deionizer/distilled quality water. Product water is called Permeate.

The dissolved solids in water are measured as Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). The TDS meter simply passes a small electrical current between 2 probes and measures how conductive the water is or conversely the resistance of the water. The reading is expressed as Parts Per Million (PPM) of dissolved solids which is essentially the same as milligrams per liter (mg/l). This translates to how much “stuff” is dissolved in the water – the higher the number the more dissolved solids.

NOTE: at this point, you can see that debris in the water -i.e. things you can see — do NOT contribute to the TDS as they do not conduct electricity. Normal system efficiency is 50% — 2 gallons in, 1 gallon treated and 1 gallon to drain.

This is called Recovery. With proper pre-treatment, membrane selection, and flow pattern design, the recovery can be 85% or higher. As recovery increases, however, rejection decreases so there is a sacrifice in water quality. As a general rule, it takes 1 PSI across the membrane for every 100 parts per million to get the first drop of water to pass through. To achieve a reasonable flow most systems operate in the 125 to 250 PSI range depending on the raw water quality and membrane selection. Fresh water membranes are used to treat water up to about 10,000 PPM.

The rejection process is electrochemical in nature so the small holes (porosity) of the elements are there for water passage not to reject dissolved solids. This porosity is in the range of 0.001 microns making it an excellent “trap” or filter for bacteria and viruses but makes the elements susceptible to plugging by oxidized materials such as iron. The most critical aspects of a membrane system design are knowledge of the raw water chemistry, customer water needs, membrane selection, membrane array (flow path), pump curve selection and pre-treatment.

Though stated last, pre-treatment is vital. Control of suspended solids, colloids, silt and bacteria must be done because of the 0.001 membrane pore size. Calcium hardness must be addressed to avoid membrane scaling. Seldom if ever are softeners employed for the scale control as they have been generally replaced with physical water treatment to suspend the hardness or chemical feed systems feeding a mild acid and surfactant compound called an anti-scale chemical. Iron and manganese control also is imperative and is often treated with simple filtration or the anti-scale chemical. Most membranes are free chlorine intolerant so it too must be eliminated either by activated carbon or with a chemical feed of a sodium sulfide compound.

Lastly, feed water temperature must be viewed. Water like oil becomes more viscous as the temperature decreases so pumps and pressure vessels need to change for low temperatures to maintain production levels. Above 110 Deg. F. membranes deteriorate so intermediate cooling may be necessary.

Seawater Membranes

Virtually everything stated above about standard RO membranes applies to the seawater equipment. Because the TDS level of seawater is 32,000 to 45,000 PPM the driving pressure must increase. Using the general rule of 1 PSI per 100 PPM, the first drop of water is passed at 320 PSI.

To achieve meaningful flows, the seawater systems operate at 750 to 1200 PSI. This obviously requires stronger internal support of the membrane itself, higher pressure membrane vessels, more robust high-pressure pumps, high-pressure piping and materials throughout that can tolerate the corrosive effects of seawater. If there is an abundant source of seawater for supply, systems are designed for recovery in the range of 25% to provide the best quality of treated (permeate) water in the range of 150 PPM.

Normally, higher recovery levels of 60% are designed and the systems maintain a permeate level less than 500 ppm, which is a World Health Organization (WHO) standard. As systems get larger, it is common to route the drain water to a device attached to the high-pressure pump motor to recover energy thus reducing electrical costs. Suffice to say, with all of the complexities and high pressures, this type of equipment does not lend itself to novice manufacturers.

Nano Membranes

These are hybrid membranes that are specifically designed to remove certain dissolved solids in the raw water while leaving others. All dissolved solids exist in an ion state. Each ion has a specific number of electrons in its outer shell. The number is referred to as the valence. One being monovalent, two being divalent, etc. The higher the number the greater the attraction to the membrane and thus the higher the removal rate –rejection.

Where standard and seawater membranes are formulated to low as well as high valence numbers, NANO membranes are formulated to selectively reject divalent and higher with an only mild rejection of monovalent ions.

The most prevalent divalent ions are Calcium, Magnesium, Carbonate and Sulfate. These are all associated with hardness so NANO membranes are often thought of and used as membrane softeners. The total rejection level of the membrane is a function of the monovalent concentration but experience indicates a level of 80% recovery. The NANO membranes operate at about 80-100 PSI so the systems use less power. Pore size is in the 0.01 micron range so bacteria and viruses are essentially blocked. The same cares and concerns relative to pre-treatment and component selection that is expressed for standard RO systems apply.

Ultrafiltration (UF) Membranes

Unlike the above-listed membranes, the UF membranes are not designed to reduce dissolved solids. They are strictly a filter as the name implies. They are selectively available with pore sizes from 0.01 to 0.20 micron. Recovery rates are in the 90% range and they operate on pressures ranging from 2 to 50 PSI. In water treatment, they are employed for colloid, silt, tannin, and bacteria removal often as pre-treatment for reverse osmosis systems. In the processing and waste industries, the applications are limitless – whey recovery for cheese plants, dye removal, dairy solids concentration, yeast separation, tertiary wastewater purification, etc.

Membranes are available in hollow fiber style (bundles of hair-like hollow tubes with inside out or outside inflow). Though on the surface the UF process appears simple, in practice it is actually more complicated than reverse osmosis or NANO because of the chemistry and hydraulic knowledge needed to produce exactly what the customer requires. We invite any and all questions.

To enhance your understanding of membranes and their applications in commercial reverse osmosis systems, pre-treatment and expected results we suggest the book “Reverse Osmosis” by Wes Byrneor the Hydranautics web site www.membranes.com.

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters are sediment filters used to reduce the amount of sediments transported by fluid through filtration. They are preferable for systems with contaminations lower than 100 ppm.

Chemicals

The chemical treatment of water employs using an extensive palette of chemicals, according to your water issue. From algaecides, biocides, corrosion inhibitors, to disinfectants, flocculants and scale inhibitors, Dime Water Inc. provides everything you need in term of chemical water treatment.

Membranes

Commercial reverse osmosis systems membranes are the most common and popular in use for removing dissolved solids present in the feed stream. Membranes used for RO have a dense layer in the polymer matrix where the separation occurs.

Control System Components

Control system components cover all types of water treatment system control products, counters, timers and various control devices. We have all components we use in stock or if not we can procure anything that we utilize in our controls systems within 24 hours.

Faucets

Faucets are basically valves used to control the release of a liquid or gas. We can provide our customers with various faucet designs.

Diaphragm Control Valves

Used in a variety of contexts, control valves regulate the water flow based on signals received from system controllers by fully or partially opening or closing, which is done automatically by actuators.

Common Issues with Reverse Osmosis (RO) Units

  • The number one problem is that people throttle the drain or turn the drain down too far and that prematurely destroys the plugs, the membrane. Another issue we often run into is that clients have either inadequate or no pre-treatment and a typical RO unit is going to fail prematurely. The third thing is the control system; there are digital, electronic and electro-mechanical control systems and if the controls aren’t working very few suppliers will provide adequate wiring diagrams and information. We at Dime Water, Inc. give out all the information possible to keep the control systems working or to be able to diagnose a problem of the control system. Another problem that we run into has to do oddly enough with the weather; when the water gets cold the production starts to go way down and people are not aware of it so it’s kind of a false problem – usually around October they start calling that their water production is going down; in these situations there is nothing wrong with the unit it is just that the water is getting cold.
  • No water or poor water flow from the pump system: the high pressure pump could have a poor power going through it, we often run into that the voltage in the house or the voltage in the building has dropped because it’s like in hot weather everybody’s got their air-conditioner on and the voltage goes down and the pumping capability goes down. It could also be a tear in the pump, it’s old and has to be replaced.
  • Feed water valve is plugged or closed: the type that we use has a bypass in the valve so that you could turn a little lever or turn a little dial and force it to open that way; otherwise all you can do is replace it.
  • Pre filter or carbon post filter is clogged: you have no choice but to replace it.
  • Water pressure: typically 20-25 psi while the unit is running.
  • Commercial reverse osmosis systems membrane is broken: there is no repair, if it is dirty it can be sometimes cleaned but if it is not producing at all or producing high TDS water it should be replaced.
  • Air pressure in holding tank is not correct: if the air pressure is too high the RO unit gets a back pressure and the result is poor quantity of water produced by the RO unit; if the water pressure is too low in the tank, then toward the end of emptying the tank you’re going to get dissatisfied with the volume of the water coming out of the faucet.
  • Airbladder in holding tank is ruptured: the air will eventually saturate and dissolve into the water and it is just a matter of time and the tank will be totally full of water and no pressure to force it out, so you won’t have water coming out at all; you need to replace the tank, or some bladder tanks have replaceable bladder in them.
  • No water to drain, drain flow restrictor in clogged: this needs to be fixed in a hurry because when you don’t have enough water going to drain, very soon you are going to destroy the membrane.
  • No water to drain, air gap faucet is clogged: you will get a buildup of airborne bacteria that just grows and grows in the lines and eventually plugs it and there is no water to drain.
  • Check valve on commercial reverse osmosis systems membrane housing is stuck: if it is stuck in the closed position all you can do is replace it; if it’s stuck in the open position you got to be very careful because in a short period of time, we are talking hours, it’s going to destroy the membrane.
  • The automatic shut off valve is malfunctioning: there is a single little diaphragm in there and if the diaphragm is ruptured you are going to have to replace the valve, there is really no way to repair them.
  • Low water pressure from the dispensing faucet: if it is toward the end of the tank, in other words you get a few glasses of water and then the water slows down it just means that you have a very low pressure in the tank and you need to increase it; typically you should have in the neighborhood of 10-15 psi in the bladder tank when it is totally empty.
  • Water TDS in the RO system is high: one reason is that you might have low pressure in the unit, the other problem could be that the water is warmer than normal and the TDS goes up; another reason could be that the product water tube is not fully engaged with the housing, so you are getting some mixing of raw water with product water, and the last thing would be that the membrane itself is now defective.
  • Taste and odor in the product water from RO: this means that somewhere you have a growth taking place in the tank and what you should do is either try to sanitize the tank, which is quite difficult or just replace it. It is probably more economical to replace it than it is to try to sanitize it.
  • Drain water overflows at air gap faucet: it is the buildup of the airborne bacteria and microorganisms in the air; you have to take a pipe cleaner and try to unplug it or try to kill the bacteria with bleach or hydrogen peroxide;
  • Faucet drops or leaks: typically it is just a little spring loaded valve what most manufacturers sell and you don’t have to replace the faucet, what you do is turn the water off at the tank and at the inlet to the RO unit and then pull out the dispenser spout and then if you look you’ll see that there is a way to unscrew the valve and put in a new valve repair kit.
  • Dime Water, Inc. provides pre- and post treatment instructions with every system at the time of the shipment. Our staffed engineers will be in touch with you to answer all your questions about pre- or post treatment. If you have any questions, call and talk to our water treatment experts.
  • What can you check if the water softener is not working?
  • Look for the bypass valve, almost all water softeners are installed with a bypass valve; the bypass valve might be open and that is why there is no soft water.
Look to see if there is adequate amount of salt in the brine tank; the salt level always has to be above the water level, if not, you are not getting saturated brine you just regenerating with water and you are going to have hard water.
  • Check the valve itself – the water softener is plugged in an outlet that’s on a switch, so when you turn the light off you turn off the water softener and there is no electricity to it and therefore the unit will not regenerate the way that it should.
Especially if you are on city water the chlorine in the city water will eventually wear out the water softener resin so keep that in mind because it will shorten the life of the water softener.
Water hardness can change so if your unit is set up for one hardness value and over a period of time the water hardness got greater, the water softener does not know that and you are going to end up with frequent hard water coming out of the unit.
  • Check the controls, these might be set up improperly.
  • Check the drain line – if you moved something around in your home or garage or basement you could have pinched or obstructed the drain line and once that is obstructed the unit will not regenerate properly, it will consume salt.
  • Common Issues with Water Softeners
  • System is not sucking water from brine tank
  • There is an injector that creates the suction; in the injector because of dirt in the water or iron in the water will often become plugged; the injector has to be cleaned.
Over a period of time the tube going from the control valve to the brine tank can age and get a crack in it and instead of drawing in brine just draws in air
If for whatever reason your water pressure is gone way down then you are not going to draw in brine
Look for the obstruction of the drain line
Error code on the digital meter
  • Check the manual of instructions and see what different error codes mean, then correct the problem (there are about 2-10 codes that can appear approximately – there are no standard codes you need the manufacturer’s own manual)
  • Getting resin in the house after installing the water softener
  • This means either that the unit was installed backwards with the inlet and outlet reversed and that will cause the resin to go out (we put upper screens on our units to prevent this) or the lowest distributor got broken out of carelessness, also if the unit froze in transit that could cause the problem as well.
  • Possible of elevating the drain line above the water softener
  • It takes 21/2 feet of elevation to act as a 1 pound backpressure so if you got reasonable pressure in your home, meaning somewhere between 30-40 psi, the elevation of a drain for 8-10 feet is not going to make any difference at all.

  • Structured Water Cell with vortexes. Utilizing super hydrophilic surfaces and induced infrared energy (consuming 1-2 watt power) along with titanium dioxide infrared reflective surfaces most of the water is structured just before delivery to the faucet.

What is Structured Water?

Recently a laboratory at the University of Washington released a report on a phase of water that has a defined structure and included information on how it is obtained. The experiments were conducted by numerous scientists and repeated over a period of years. The resulting water has a higher density, is more viscous and has a pH slightly higher than unstructured water. The individual water molecules cluster in a hexagonal pattern with these clusters stacked one on top of the other in chains. The longer the chain and the more of them results in more struc-tured water. Intuitively, because of its greater density, a given volume of structured water will contain a higher number of hydrating water molecules than an equal volume of regular water.

ESF 2.0 (Envrionmental Scale Free) Water Descaler

American flag with Made in USA text, indicating product originDownload Brochure

Little did we know back in 1996 when we completed testing of a revolutionary new process to prevent hard water scale that it would become the central core of our business.

Our version of a water descaler or scale preventer was named Enviro Scale Free or ESF.

Lowers Water Surface Tension
No Water Wasted To Drain

Elimination of hard water scale formation and removal of existing scale has numerous benefits including:

  • Reduced water heating energy. A film of scale within a heater acts as an insulation barrier between the source of heat (flame) and water. Over time, the buildup of scale becomes so thick that the heat source is on 2 or 3 times as long increasing energy use by 200% or 300%. Additionally, this excess heat often damages heater tanks and components beyond repair.
  • Better water pressure. Scale build-up within pipes, especially at fittings, restricts flow with a resulting loss in pressure.
  • Lowers water use. With a reduction in pressure, the tendency of people to overcome this by letting the water run longer and ultimately increase water consumption by 25% or more.
  • Water fixtures last longer with fewer repairs. In addition to being unsightly and destructive to plating, scale is abrasive and destroys internal seals.
  • Water using appliances last longer. As with fixtures, hardness scale dramatically impairs the moving parts and seals within items such as dish washers, clothes washers, toilet valves, beverage dispensers and humidifiers.
  • Plant growth is enhanced. The processes within the ESF lowers the surface tension of water enabling a lessor volume of water to penetrate more deeply into a plant improving growth and productivity.

Unlike other water descalers or scale preventers on the market, our ESF was designed to adapt as a stand-alone product or be included within a tank which fostered the development of an additional, extensive line of products including the ESF PLUS, Maxi-Cure and Aquafer. The combined products have undoubtably prevented the waste of TENS OF MILLIONS OF GALLONS OF WATER and eliminated the discharge of MILLIONS OF POUNDS OF CHEMICALS AND SALT into the environment.

As a water descaler or scale preventer, the ESF consists of two distinct processes. The first is a catalytic chamber where a negligible drop in water pressure upsets the carbon dioxide-bicarbonate alkalinity-calcium balance causing molecules of calcium carbonate particles to form. These particles then flow through a flexible, inert catalytic material where the individual particles nucleate into larger entities. The water then enters multiple magnetic fields where a relatively weak voltage is induced by the application of Faraday’s Law equation. The resulting energy acts on the water in different ways. First, it breaks down the zeta potential separating the mildly charged hardness particles causing them to agglomerate into larger more stable, long-life particles. Second the clustering of water molecules around dissolved ions causing ionic radii is canceled and thirdly hydrogen bonded water clusters are reduced. The last two causing the surface tension drop.

Applications for our ESF based systems of water descalers include

  • Apartment complexes
  • Hotels
  • Motels
  • Resorts
  • Reverse Osmosis pretreatment
  • Restaurants
  • Homes
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing Homes
  • Condo Complexes
  • Farms and ranches
  • Research facilities

The ESF Hard Water Descaler / Scale Preventer is used by many to protect their equipment, as well as many commercial enterprises.

What Does the ESF descaler Do?

Hard water scale blocks nozzles, coats pipework, and significantly decreases the efficiency of boilers and heat exchangers leading to substantially increased energy consumption.

The scale preventer avoids these costly challenges by treating water with a patented system that forms calcium hardness crystals, which pass through a strong magnetic field, which renders them harmless to plumbing fixtures. This produces water that is much easier to clean. In addition, the surface tension of the water is greatly reduced, resulting in a higher quality of water absorption in the human body and plant life.

Commercial applications of the ESF

These are just some of the business types that benefit from reducing hard water issues from magnetic water treatment for scale prevention.

  • Landscaping: Scale prevention improves soil percolation and better root propagation by lowering the surface tension of the water.
  • Restaurants: The ESF prevents scale buildup in icemakers, steamers, and coffee makers.
  • Hospitals: Kitchen maintenance is reduced, and protection is provided for autoclaves, steam tables, and laundry equipment.
  • Specialty equipment: The ESF Scale Preventer is used for scale prevention pre-treatment in commercial reverse osmosis systems, car washes, cooling towers, greenhouses, and many more.

Instructions

Please read and understand these instructions before continuing with the installation. Failure to do so may cause costly water damage to your facility and/or may damage the unit in such a way that the warranty is voided!

Each unit is factory-tested for at least an hour on high and low-pressure air to be certain that it is structurally sound and leak-free before shipment.

If you have any questions call your provider of this product or call 760-734-5787 and ask for technical assistance.

The materials used in the construction of this unit are all NSF approved and are recognized components supplied to us by major plumbing material manufactures. We MUST use PVC fittings on each end to assure that proper chemistry takes place within the unit.

Not all people or tradesmen are familiar with the installation of equipment using threaded PVC fittings. To avoid damage to the ESF unit and cancellation of its warranty and to prevent future leaks that can cause costly water damages, follow the guidelines below:

  1. Install with a plumbing union at each end. One on the inlet and one on the outlet.
  2. Use adequate and properly placed pipe hangers. The weight of pipes on this unit can cause extensive, costly damages
  3. When threading the union fittings into each end, use at least 10 wraps of Teflon tape on the mating male threads and also use a Teflon thread paste specifically designed for use on plastic threads.
  4. Do not over tighten and drive the male pipe threads into the female threaded ends of the ESF beyond a SNUG point.
  5. After installation, pressurize the unit for at least one (1) hour and then inspect closely for any leaks. Correct as necessary.

Installation Instructions

This unit is directional in construction and MUST be installed as shown in the CAD drawing. Water pressure to the unit should not exceed 100 PSI and the water temperature must not exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Pressure and temperature exceeding these values may cause loss of performance and SERIOUS, COSTLY DAMAGES DUE TO WATER LEAKS. If water temperature and or pressure are expected to exceed these values please contact the contractor or Dime Water, Inc. READ AND UNDERSTAND THE ENTIRE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE INSTALLING THE UNIT!

  1. Turn off the water supply.
  2. Determine the water flow direction at the point of installation. Untreated water goes into the port as shown in the sketch. When looking into the inlet port, one sees a gray plastic piece with a plugin in the center. The inlet end also is the end where the grounding screw is located. Unlike the installation of a salt type softener, there is no need to by-pass outside faucets with this device. The water from an ESF unit actually is good for plants because of reduced surface tension. The unit may be installed vertically or horizontally with disregard to the up or down position.
  3. For proper function, this device has plastic female inlet and outlet threads. To avoid damage to the unit, use Teflon tape and Teflon based tread compound when connecting to the unit. THERE IS NO NEED TO OVERTIGHTEN. SNUG WILL DO THE JOB. OVER TIGHTENING CAN CAUSE COMPONENT FAILURE WHICH WILL CAUSE LEAKS AND RESULTING COSLY DAMAGES.
  4. On inlet and outlet end please employ a union connection. This will reduce the mechanical forces on the ESF and will avoid damage due to installation.
  5. The ground lug should have #22 or larger wire connected to it and the other end connected to earth ground. This enhances the catalytic portion of the device.
  6. If installed in a copper or galvanized pipeline, please “jumper” the unit with #10 or larger wire to avoid disturbance of the grounding of the electrical system within the building.
  7. Once installed, slowly refill the system with water and observe for leaks. Correct if required.
  8. There are moving parts within the ESF. There may be a slight increase in the noise of flowing water. For this reason, install away from sleeping areas or other areas where a small noise may be bothersome to a person.

Unharness the powers of nature and irrigation science to improve plant penetration of even brackish water with less water needed. A low electric voltage is induced in the water by its flow through a strategically placed, strong (neodymium) magnetic field. The resulting energy imparted to the water causes it to cluster in stacked hexagonal planes while releasing a small percentage of hydrogen ions that create hydronium (H3O). Such minor changes to water have been laboratory and field documented to cause water to travel further and more quickly in plants’ xylem (capillary) system. Even “bad” water.

What does the Maxi-Cure Do?

Untreated water enters the Maxi-Cure system flowing through multiple layers of filtration, reducing the levels of chlorine, volatile organics, THMs, off tastes and odors, sediment, suspended solids, iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell).

The filtered water then passes through a spring-loaded chamber, which creates a small pressure drop. This pressure drop initiates the formation of calcium hardness crystals.

These crystals pass through a catalytic surface, which greatly multiplies the number of crystals.

The water containing a multitude of calcium crystals then passes through a strong magnetic field which serves to hold the crystals in suspension form for a minimum of 72 hours rendering them harmless to your plumbing and plumbing fixtures. The entire process bonds calcium ions to each other rather than to your plumbing. A simple wiping with a damp cloth is typically sufficient to remove any residual mineral deposits rather than the usual abrasives and “elbow grease” that are normally required. The surface tension of the water is also reduced which results in a higher quality of water absorption into the human body and plant life.

Due to the uniqueness of the Maxi Cure, we can customize the filtering media to troubleshoot virtually any water issue you may have.

Maxi-Cure Water Conditioning System Installation Instructions

Congratulations on your purchase of the Maxi-Cure Water Conditioning system.

Your Maxi-Cure water conditioning system will provide you with numerous benefits as a result of multiple stages of filtration along with peace-of-mind in knowing that you are not contributing to the pollution of our water sources. No harmful contaminants will be discharged into the sewer or septic system that will cause down-stream ecological problems. Your dealer, along with your assistance, has selected this system based upon the water-related problems that you wish to improve. The system’s design is simple and the components are very reliable. You will experience many years of excellent water quality with rarely a need to repair or service the system. If parts are needed, we have utilized nationally recognized components that you will find readily available.

Location of the Maxi-Cure Water Conditioning System

Choose a location that is level and preferably not in direct sunlight. Minimizing direct sunlight will prolong the life of the system and its components.

Since the Maxi-Cure water is actually favorable to plants and lawns, if desired, you may install the system before the irrigation plumbing system.

Periodically, small amounts of trapped dirt and debris will be washed-out of the system during the backwash cycle. These trapped particles are discharged through the system’s drain line and into a nearby drain (properly air-gapped). This drain must be able to accept a flow rate of 3 to 7 gallons per minute and a total volume of 30-50 gallons during a single backwash cycle. It is suggested that the drain be within 20 ft. of the system. The system will backwash itself every 10 days. Typically, the washing machine drain is utilized for this function. Since the Maxi-Cure does not discharge any harmful contaminants, it is often acceptable to discharge this water into a dry well or a lawn/garden saturator if the climate permits.

Installation of the Maxi-Cure

PLEASE NOTE: THESE ARE GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS THAT WILL PROVIDE GUIDELINES. MANY LOCALITIES HAVE RIGID CODES INVOLVING THE INSTALLATION OF WATER APPLIANCES. PLEASE CHECK WITH LOCAL CODE COMPLIANCE AUTHORITIES OR UTILIZE THE SERVICES OF A LICENSED PLUMBER AS NEEDED.

  1. Locate the In & Out arrows that are located on the valve ports on the back of the valve.
  2. It is imperative that the water flow in the proper direction through the system. The inward pointing arrow indicates the inlet flow to the system. Likewise, the outward pointing arrow indicates the outlet flow to the house. These ports may be further identified with “Raw” (inlet) & “Treated” (outlet).
  3. Plan your installation by giving careful consideration to the proximity of the drain receptacle (within 20 ft.), and a power connection.
  4. Turn-off the water line shut-off valve. Check to make sure that the water is off by turning on a faucet inside of the house. Continue to open available faucets to drain the water from the lines.
  5. Using proper plumbing techniques, cut-away a section of pipe on the main water line. Again, it is your choice if you wish to treat the water to the irrigation system. If so, the cut-away section must precede the tee that feeds that system. Please note this may cause the cut-away section to precede the pressure regulator. You must not exceed 100 psi to the system. If this is the case, you must determine a method for regulating the pressure below 100 psi. If you do not wish to treat the water to the irrigation system, the cut-away section must be after the tee to the irrigation system. This usually results in the cut-away section to follow the pressure regulator, which typically eliminates an excessive amount of water pressure from entering the system. It is good practice to always check the incoming water pressure regardless if it is regulated or not.
  6. Again, using proper plumbing techniques, make the feed connection to the system by connecting the inlet line to the inlet side of the pipe connector and connecting the outlet line to the outlet pipe connector. Please note that you should not attempt to make sweat (solder) connections that are within 1 ft. of any plastic components. If this is unavoidable, you should wrap a water-drenched cloth around the plastic components that are in question and attempt to keep these parts as cooled-down as possible.
  7. Once the feed connection has been made, it is now time to make the drain connection. Locate an available drain within 20 ft. of the installation. If you plan to use flexible ” drain line tubing, utilize the ” male threaded fitting that has been equipped with the system. If you plan to use ” rigid pipe, you will need to utilize a ” PVC male adapter fitting in place of the barbed fitting. Use Teflon tape to make the connection.
  8. Begin to run your drain line to the drain receptacle. Plumbing codes require that you make a properly air-gapped connection once the drain line terminates at the drain. The distance between the drain line and the drain must be at least 1 “. An air gap provides security against the possibility of a cross-connection between the freshwater and wastewater systems. Special air-gap connectors are available-contact your dealer.

Also hiring an expert plumber to work through the whole process might be the right choice. It can also help you in understanding the whole working of the appliance.

Start-up Procedure

  1. With the valve plugged into a receptacle and the power on, place the unit into the bypass mode or if the system is not equipped with a bypass valve, make sure that the main-line shut- off is in the off position.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the ‘Regen’ Button on the front of the control valve.
  3. Put the system into the backwash position by holding down the Regen Button for 5 seconds. You will hear the system enter the backwash setting with the countdown clock showing. When countdown begins (factory set at 15 minutes for well water/10 minutes for city water) unplug the unit. NOTE: Factory settings are different is we know the water chemistry prior to sale. Slowly open the bypass valve or the main water shut-off valve and let the tank fill with water at a rate of approximately 1-gallon per minute. This will purge the unit of air.
  4. Once there is all water and no air being discharged from the drain line, open the bypass valve or main water valve completely. Allow unit to run to drain until the water to drain is crystal clear. Please Note: During transportation some of the media within the unit becomes quite dusty. The initial water to drain may be black or gray. This is normal and to be expected and is no cause for alarm.
  5. Plug in the unit to re-establish power to the timer. Once again press the Regen Button. The valve will now enter the rinse cycle. When the timer begins counting down (factory set at 15 minutes for well water/10 minutes for city water), unplug the unit.
  6. Allow rapid rinse water to flow to the drain until water appears to be clear. Plug unit back in. Push the Regen button.
  7. A blinking filtering icon will appear meaning the piston is resetting itself.
  8. Once piston is set, the time of day will show.
  9. Set the actual time of day at this point by holding the Set Clock button (also down arrow) The hours will flash. Use up or down arrow to set the hour according to your local time. Press next button to see minutes flashing. Set accordingly. Press next once again and system will go back into service mode with your local time displayed.
  10. Observe entire unit for leaks. Correct as necessary before leaving job site. Confirm that inlet and outlet are not reversed. Be sure that by-pass valve(s) are in the service position.
  11. Run water at all faucets to purge lines of any air that may have gotten into the system during installation.

The Maxi-Cure Plus is essentially the same as the Maxi-Cure, except periodically and automatically OZONE is drawn into the unit to kill any accumulated bacteria

How Does the Maxi-Cure Plus Work?

Untreated water enters the Maxi-Cure system flowing through multiple layers of filtration, reducing the levels of sediment, suspended solids, iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell).

The filtered water then passes through a spring-loaded chamber, which creates a small pressure drop. This pressure drop initiates the formation of calcium hardness crystals.

These crystals pass through a catalytic surface, which greatly multiplies the number of crystals.

The surface tension of the water is also reduced which results in a higher quality of water absorption into the human body and plant life.

After a preset period of time such as 1 to 4 days, the unit goes through a 3-step regeneration period during which any accumulated bacteria is killed and the filter media is returned to its as-new condition.  This is normally set to occur a 2:00 am to avoid untreated water getting into the facility.

Nitrate and Sulfate in Water and Special ION Exchange Resins

American flag with Made in USA text, indicating product originDownload Brochure

Nitrates in water in levels in excess of 45 mg/l as Nitrate or 10 mg/l expressed as Nitrogen-N can be a health issue when in drinking water. The source of nitrates in water is caused by the breakdown of nitrogen based fertilizers, animal waste and rotting vegetation by certain microorganisms in soil. Rain then transports the nitrates through the soil into ground water (wells) and into lakes and rivers (surface water).

Nitrates in water in levels in excess of 45 mg/l as Nitrate NO3  or 10 mg/l expressed as Nitrogen-N can be a health issue when in drinking water. They impart no color, taste or odor to water. The source of nitrates in water is caused by the breakdown of nitrogen based fertilizers, animal waste and rotting vegetation by certain microorganisms in soil. Rain then transports the nitrates through the soil into ground water (wells) and into lakes and rivers (surface water).  Very common in well, lake and river waters.

Sulfates in water in water in water in excess of 250 mg/l as SO4 has negative health effects.  They impart a medical taste to water but no color or odor.  The source is the erosion of natural minerals into water.  Seldom found in surface water but common in well water.

We normally incorporate Nitrate and Sulfate resins which regenerate with Chloride with softening resin that regenerates with Sodium to utilize both Sodium and Chloride which is salt simultaneously as a benefit to the end user. This combination will

  • Treat Hardness/Scale
  • Treat Nitrates or Sulfates

Once Nitrates are consumed, they change to nitrites which enter the bloodstream and reduce the oxygen carrying ability of the blood— a condition called methemoglobinemia. Most healthy adults have enzymes that repair this condition whereas infants, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems do not.

Drinking water with a sulfate level in excess of 250 mg/l may also cause a health issue. Water with high levels of sulfate often has a medicinal taste causing humans and livestock to drink less water than they should and has a laxative effect that further dehydrates. At very high levels copper plumbing corrosion is common. Both Nitrate and sulfate are negatively charged molecules as they exist in water and may be easily reduced to almost non-existence through the use of our special anion exchange resins.

These resins are very similar to those used within water softeners. The completed units look exactly like a water softener.  Most often, a single unit is employed providing treated water except for a 90 minute period in the middle of the night every few days while the system regenerates.  Meter controlled alternating twin versions are available to provide 24/7/365 treatment.

As a safety step, we employ resins that have superior holding ability for either nitrate or sulfate so that there will never be “dumping” of these compounds into the treated water stream even if they are run beyond their capacity. Sizes range in flow rates from those for home to 100’s of gallons per minute for hotels, restaurants, apartment buildings, etc. Because each system is tailored to the application, pricing can be quoted only after a water analysis is provided and a design calculated.

How ozone O3 is produced

It starts as an Oxygen molecule O2 which is energized by a strong electrical field such as a lightning bolt in nature, a man-made electrical field called corona discharge, or 185 nanometers wave length rays from a special ultraviolet light. Some of the O2 molecules split into two oxygen atoms O- which then combine with remaining O2 molecules to form Ozone O3.  This activated Oxygen is not considered to be chemical.

What it does

Oxidizes chemicals such as iron and hydrogen sulfide in the water so they can be removed with simple filtration. The aggregate of these oxidizable chemicals is referred to as the waters chemical oxygen demand (COD). Ozone also ruptures bacterial, virus and other biological material cell walls. The aggregate of all bacterial and microorganism cells in water are referred to as the waters biological oxygen demand (BOD). Additionally, ozone will oxidize (destroy) virtually any organic compounds in the water which are primarily hydro carbons into their basic constituents of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen thus rendering them harmless

Effectiveness

Properly done, ozone will react 4-10 times as fast as liquid chlorine and 2 times as fast as chlorine dioxide. No know disinfectant by products (DBP) are produced as a residual.  This is important. As an example, the trihalomethane DBP’s caused by chlorine, bromine, iodine and fluoride are carcinogens.

How to get ozone into the water

Forget bubbling into a tank. This is grossly inefficient unless water is passed through an ozone injector first. Best is to use an injector that is specifically designed for providing mass transfer of a gas into a liquid such as a Mazzei.   Normally, the injector is incorporated in a side stream with the majority of the water going through a by-pass valve to create a pressure drop that induces a vacuum.  The side stream ozonated water is then introduced after the by-pass.

Strength of ozone

Dependent on the equipment as well as the gas used. Air being approx. 20% oxygen will yield one level of ozone and pure oxygen will yield about 2X the level of ozone produced by air. Almost pure Oxygen is mainly obtained by relatively small devices that absorb Nitrogen out of a stream of air

Materials

Because of the aggressive nature of ozone, material selection is extremely important. This includes all fittings, tubes, pipes, valves and tanks.  Manufacturers of these components normally publish detailed information on their materials used and there are numerous on-line sites charting material vs. chemical compatibility.

Numbers to use

Ozone output. Units are rated in grams Ozone production per hour at a given air/Oxygen flow in SQFM. Relating water flow to grams/hr. Ozone output, 1 gram per hour ozone unit will yield a concentration of 1 mg/l (PPM) Ozone into a flow of 4.4 GPM. Simple algebra will permit calculating concentrations for different flows and system outputs.

Residence time. Almost all known bacteria will be eliminated with a CT (concentration in mg/l x time of contact in minutes) of 1.4.   Where a CT of 1.4 of ozone for many bacteria will do the job, by comparison, the CT for liquid chlorine bleach may be as high as 27.   Do your homework on-line by cross referencing the necessary CT to the worse biologic that you need to kill and this is for a BOD so remember that some effectiveness is lost because of COD consumption.

Ozone life is measured as its half-life in minutes it takes for ½ of remaining Ozone to revert to Oxygen.  20 minutes at room temperature. Inversely proportional to temperature.

Elements of a properly designed system

  • Oxygen generator and air dryer
  • Injector system

Dime Water, Inc. can offer customers just about every kind of cartridge that one can think of including:

  • Off the shelf cartridges – for taking out turbidity and making the water look clear
  • Variety of carbon cartridges – for removing taste and odor (including chlorine and chloramines)
  • Cartridges produced with the same media that one would find in the list of filter media – for particular applications such as arsenic or fluoride removal (up to 4 different media can be combined in 1 cartridge)
  • Cartridges are often a viable alternative for producing water at a single point, like a special faucet or a water cooler or something of that nature where it is either impractical or financially not viable to treat all of the water in the facility.

The cartridge sizes that are available are:

  • 2 ½ inches in diameter by 10 inches long
  • 2 ½ inches in diameter by 20 inches long
  • 4 ½ inches in diameter by 20 inches long
  • 8 inches in diameter by 36 Inches long

The flow rate for each cartridge is a function of two things:

  1. The size of the cartridge
  2. Precisely what needs to be removed with the media

If we are dealing with something physical, like turbidity in the water, we don’t have to be too precise, but if we are dealing with something that has a health related issue such as arsenic, or uranium, or chromium then it is very important that we control or minimize the flow rate and provide the customer with a good estimate of the life of the cartridge, so that there is no chance to overrun it and end up not treating the water.

The housings are made of a NSF compliant material. Cartridges with media (resin, carbon, etc.) have at each end of the cartridge  a 5 micron filter that prevents the loss of the media into the water and also gives crystal clear looking water.

Replacable cartridge filters

Cartridges are a viable alternative for producing water at a single point, being built using an NSF-compliant material for housings and at each end of the cartridge, there is a 5 micron filter to prevent the loss of filter media into the water.

Nano Filtration is a pressure driven separation process. The filtration process takes place on a separation layer formed by an organic semi per-meable membrane. The driving force of the separation process is the pressure difference between the feed (retentate) and the filtrate(permeate) side at the separation layer of the membrane. However, because of its selectivity, one or several components of a dissolved mix-ture are retained by the membrane despite of the driving force, while water and substances with a molecular weight less than 200D (daltons) are able to permeate the separation layer. Because nano filtration membranes also have a selectivity for the charge of the dissolved components, monovalent ions will pass the membrane and divalent and multivalent ions will be rejected.

Twin Alternating Water Softeners and Filtration Systems

American flag with Made in USA text, indicating product originDownload Brochure

Twin Alternating Water Softeners and Filters are designed to give the customers conditioned water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Single tank water softeners require a one to two hour window for regeneration. During this time, the system goes into a hard water by-pass. In some cases, this hard water by-pass is not possible because conditioned water is needed on-demand at any time. Twin alternating systems were engineered so as one tank is regenerating, the second tank takes over assuring the end-user conditioned water on a continual basis.

How does a UV Light Work?

UV light is similar to the light from the sun and must be treated as such. Ultraviolet disinfection has been known for over 100 years as an effective method for inactivating waterborne pathogens and viruses. Ultraviolet light disinfects when it is applied to the water at a specified intensity and length of time. Waterborne micro-organisms are rendered “microbiologically dead” by penetrating the cell wall and affecting the microorganisms’ DNA so that it is unable to reproduce.
Ultraviolet Disinfection has become the most popular alternative or supplement to traditional chemicals such as chlorine and chloramines. These systems offer a number of advantages as well:

  • Safe and easy to operate.
  • Easily adapted to fit existing plumbing
  • Does not inject any taste or odors like chlorines do
  • Does not produce any undesirable by-products

Most private homes receive water from a municipal supply which is treated at the municipal water treatment plant.  Other private homes have their own well which pulls water from the ground into the home.  Both sources have the potential to become contaminated in many different ways.  By installing a UV treatment system, you can eliminate the possibility of contaminated water from such microorganisms as E. coli, fecal coliform, and Cryptosporidium.

Water Store Equipment

American flag with Made in USA text, indicating product originDownload Brochure

Water stores are basically mini water bottling plants that use the same type of equipment as the larger manual filling bottling plants. What makes water stores profitable is the fact that there is no need of storing the water or bottles, because people come in and refill their own bottles with fresh and great tasting water.

Whole house reverse osmosis water filter systems are custom built based on detailed laboratory testing of the water to be treated. The equipment can be designed for municipal or well. When designing well water treatment, we take into consideration the depth of the well. This gives us an idea of the future quality of the water. Shallow wells are unpredictable and are subject to radical changes as deeper wells tend to be more consistent, therefore, with shallow wells, we may recommend additional water treatment methods to cover needs in the future. Next, we consider additional variables: The size of the home, the size of the plumbing coming into the home, whether or not the home is on septic or municipal sewer, and where the equipment is to be placed. Once we have all the above information, we engineer a whole house reverse osmosis water filter specifically for your needs.

Our whole house reverse systems require very little maintenance. We typically suggest an annual service of changing the pre-filtration cartridges and a simple inspection of equipment, which is a minimal cost to the consumer. We have records where homeowners have gone up to three years without needing any service for their whole house reverse osmosis filter. One of our most notable clients, NASA has one of these systems they use for plating on spacecraft. Their system produced over 10,000,000 gallons before service was needed.
